From April 7 to 10, the very first session of The Seasons took place at Smilegate’s Pangyo Campus and Seohyeon Office. This program was designed to strengthen the bonds among Smilegate members and cultivate a culture of shared emotional growth through caring experiences.
This terrarium class followed the theme of “healing.” Participants were selected based on personal stories submitted by employees seeking emotional renewal. Out of 328 applicants, 160 were carefully chosen. What made the experience even more special was that employees could either apply for themselves or nominate a colleague they wanted to gift healing to.
Here’s a glimpse into the terrarium workshop where participants created their own little worlds.
Terrarium: A terrarium is a type of gardening where plants are cultivated inside a glass container. The tactile process of working with stones, soil, and greenery provides a warm and restorative experience.
Quiet Immersion: Into the World of Terrariums
With calm music playing in the background, employees sat in front of their neatly arranged materials, ready to create their terrariums. On the table were glass containers, volcanic rocks, special terrarium soil, silk moss, and Humata tyermannii, all carefully laid out.
The first step was to create a drainage layer using volcanic rocks, then shape the terrain by adjusting the soil’s elevation. With tweezers, scissors, and tiny shovels in hand, they carefully shaped the soil into miniature hills and valleys. Everyone was fully immersed in their work, deeply focused on their terrarium creation.
A Terrarium Created at My Fingertips
About 30 minutes into the session, the participants began working in earnest on their terrariums. First, they sprayed the soil lightly with water, then gently tore pieces of silk moss and placed them carefully atop the soil. Next, using tweezers, they delicately planted Humata tyermannii.
Next, participants unleashed their creativity, adding personal touches to complete their terrariums. Some created rocky cliffs with volcanic stone, others carved winding streams with white sand. One participant crafted a vast green forest, another designed a cozy woodland path, while someone else built a mysterious cave-like scene.
Finally, participants chose from a selection of miniature figurines to add a whimsical charm to their terrariums. Some even brought their own personalized figures, brimming with character.
Kim Yeon-kyung, Part Leader at Smilegate Entertainment, shared, “As I worked on my terrarium, a sense of calm washed over me. Adding my favorite figurines made it feel truly one-of-a-kind.”
An Ji-heon, Senior Manager at Smilegate RPG, remarked, “Since I enjoy keeping fish and aquatic creatures as a hobby, I’ve always been curious about terrariums. The process of handling soil and planting was so engaging that the hour flew by without me even noticing. I plan to keep the finished terrarium in my office and look at it whenever I need a moment of peace.”
The participants looked at their finished terrariums with proud smiles. It was a time to step away from daily routines and reconnect with nature. Just like the harmony of soil, moss, air, and water in each terrarium, the session nurtured moments of true connection and shared understanding.
